The Conseil Régional, located in the Pontiffroy district of Metz, near the médiathèque, the Saint-Vincent basilica and the Belle-Isle hospital, is the nerve centre of the political and administrative life of the Grand Est region. Housed in a modern and functional building, it hosts sessions and meetings where strategic decisions for regional development are debated and made. Close to the historic heart of Metz, about a ten-minute walk from the cathedral, this building symbolises the region's commitment to innovation and local dynamism, while remaining accessible to citizens who want to better understand how their regional administration works.
Metz is a city with a rich cultural heritage. At a crossroads between France, Germany and even Luxembourg, it is influenced by many currents. This is reflected in the old Quartier Impérial, built from the end of the 19th century, where neo-Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles blend, giving the impression of travelling through the ages. Nearby, you'll find the Metz train station as well as the Porte Serpenoise and other religious buildings, such as the Sainte-Thérèse church.
The Porte des Allemands, a true medieval jewel of Metz, is one of the city's most emblematic monuments. Dating from the 13th century, this former fortified gate, with its imposing towers and stone arched bridge, served as a defensive crossing over the Seille. Its name comes from the Teutonic Order knights who once lived nearby. Today, the Porte des Allemands is a must-visit for history and architecture enthusiasts, offering a fascinating dive into Metz's medieval past and a picturesque setting to admire views over the river and the ancient ramparts.
The place de la République is the largest square in Metz. It's the vibrant heart of Metz, harmoniously combining history and modernity. Nestled in the city centre, it offers a vast pedestrian space, ideal for relaxing, strolling or enjoying the many events that take place there. It is surrounded by emblematic sites of the city, such as the Banque de France building, the Ney barracks and the Metz judicial court. Fully pedestrianised, it is extended by the Esplanade and its large garden. With its friendly atmosphere, the Place de la République is a must-see for both locals and visitors, a true reflection of the soul of Metz.
The Cathédrale Saint-Étienne of Metz, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, stands majestically in the heart of the city, on the place d'Armes, and fascinates with its impressive dimensions and fine detail. Nicknamed "the Good Lord's lantern" for its 6,500 m² of stained glass that bathes the interior in coloured light, it houses works by master glassmakers such as Marc Chagall. It was classified as a historic monument by UNESCO in 1930. This cathedral is a place full of history and a spiritual and cultural symbol, attracting many visitors each year who are amazed by its grandeur and timeless beauty.
The place Coislin, located in the heart of Metz, is an emblematic space in the city, appreciated for its large area and strategic location. It serves as a meeting and event venue for locals. Close to the shopping streets and the place Saint-Louis, it's in a lively neighbourhood. Place Coislin is also known for being the second-largest square in the city.
Opened in 2010, the Centre Pompidou-Metz hosts many exhibitions of Modern and Contemporary Art. The museum entrance is at 1 Parvis des Droits de l'Homme. It is one of the most visited French museums outside Paris, notably thanks to its proximity to Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg.
This is another square in the Metz city centre, located opposite the shopping centre of the same name, the Centre Saint-Jacques. The place Saint-Jacques is one of the liveliest and most popular places in Metz. Located in the heart of the historic and pedestrian city centre, not far from the Cathédrale Saint-Étienne, between the rues Fabert and Ladoucette, it is lined with cafés, restaurants and shops, offering a friendly and lively atmosphere throughout the day. It is also the scene of various events and animations, which strengthen its central role in the cultural life of Metz.
On the outskirts is the Parc Pas du Loup, a peaceful and charming green space. With its shaded paths, large lawns and playgrounds, it invites visitors of all ages to relax and enjoy outdoor leisure. This park is ideal for a walk, a picnic or a nature break, far from the urban bustle. A true haven of peace in the heart of Metz, offering a natural and friendly setting to reconnect with nature. It runs alongside the Seille as well as the avenue André Malraux, which joins the Metz ring road. Parking here seems complicated since the surroundings are quite empty. Although there are indeed a few streets, such as the rue de la Vachotte, there are no available spaces.
The Jardin Botanique of Metz is a green setting in the heart of the city, where varied and exotic plant species coexist. This 4.4-hectare park offers majestic greenhouses, themed gardens and flower spaces throughout the year. You can admire a rose garden, a pond and many hundred-year-old trees.
The 4,800 on-street spaces in Metz are divided into four zones.
Parking is to be paid at a pay-and-display machine with cash or card. It is also possible to pay via mobile apps: Easypark, INDIGO NEO or PayByPhone.
For residents, healthcare professionals and tradespeople, it is possible to apply for a parking permit allowing access to preferential rates, by providing specific information.
We recommend consulting the Metz parking rules to avoid any unpleasant surprises during your parking, such as having your vehicle towed away or receiving an FPS.
