Park at night or on the weekend
On-street parking is free in the evening (after 7pm), on public holidays, Sundays and all of August. What's more, car parks like Hôtel de Ville offer a night cap at only €6.80 from 8pm to 9am.

Where to find a free parking space in Villeurbanne?
The town offers several free-parking opportunities for visitors and residents.
The first 15 minutes free on-street
This is the main free offer for visitors in the town centre. Twice a day (morning and afternoon), you get 15 free minutes of parking in the paid zone. Be sure to register your vehicle at the meter or via an app.
Fully free periods
On-street parking becomes fully free in the following cases:
- In the evening, from 7pm to 9am the next day
- Sundays and public holidays
- All of August
Car parks with a first free period
- Gratte-Ciel car park: first 15 minutes free
- Hôtel de Ville car park: no short-stay free period, but a very attractive night cap
- Central Park: no free period, but a very affordable €0.50 per half-hour rate
Places where it's very hard to park in Villeurbanne
Urban density and the strong appeal of certain areas create constant pressure on parking.
The Charpennes and Charmettes area
The Charpennes district, especially around Place Charles Hernu and Cours Émile Zola, is one of the densest and liveliest areas of Villeurbanne. This major interchange hub (metro A, trams T1 and T4) draws huge flows of students, workers and visitors, making parking extremely difficult.
- A largely paid and limited zone: To ease the pressure, the council has made parking paid across a wide area covering Charpennes, Place Wilson and Charmettes. It covers about 640 spaces, with a rate of €1.40 per hour and parking limited to 2 hr 30.
- Strong pressure from healthcare workers: The presence of Charpennes hospital adds to the difficulty. Traditionally, its staff struggle to find spaces inside the hospital and fall back on surrounding streets, contributing to saturation.
- An alternative solution: Given these difficulties, renting a space in a secure private car park, like those on rue Jubin or rue Henri Rolland, can be a comfortable solution. These car parks are often close to tram and metro stops.
The hyper-centre and the Gratte-Ciel district
Around the town hall, the TNP and Avenue Henri Barbusse, spaces are highly sought after. Zone 1 (most expensive parking) is designed to encourage turnover, but at peak times and on Saturdays, finding an on-street space can be very hard. The Hôtel de Ville car park and the Gratte-Ciel car park are then the best alternatives.
The La Doua university area
With over 30,000 students and staff, the La Doua campus (Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1) generates huge car flows on weekdays. Central Park is ideally located, but demand often exceeds supply during class hours.
The Médipôle area and rue Léon Blum
The parking available around the Médipôle hospital centre and rue Léon Blum is under very strong pressure (staff, patients, visitors). The Médipôle and Centre Léon Blum car parks are essential solutions for parking calmly, especially during consultation hours.
Market areas
On market days, especially at Place Wilson, parking is very hard and subject to specific bans. For example, at Place Wilson, parking is forbidden from 5am to 2:30pm on market days. We advise avoiding these areas at peak times.
